The fate of Sylvia K.

30th January 2010
"socialized like a southern European stray dog, begging for mercy"

"Sometimes I made good, sometimes I get around cancer," explains Sylvia K. (name changed) her life, city planner, she was, a TV writer, she had seen the world and always a feared: the loss of their freedom. Because she had been socialized as "a southern European stray dog - to try to clean off without the dog" in a children's home in northern Hesse. The consequences of that home education, which she would have to tell. Sylvia K. lives abroad, to return to Germany they will not.

The Assembly has set up a round table where the fate of children in the 50s, 60s and 70s worked should. How did you hear about this round table?

Sylvia K. Recently I heard on the radio WDR 5 a show. Reported, was that violence against children in care is discussed. My brother and I were victims of escalating violence. Although in Bremerhaven, we were brought into the remote northern Hesse. In the following years we saw our parents only once a year, alternately our father and mother. The place was called Vöhl, it was a children's home of the AWO.

Like other children in care also have your brother and you are experiencing violence?

Sylvia K. The then National Director was a picture-Nazi. He crushed my brother lying on the ground in front of my Eyes. He has never recovered from that. I have the pictures from the home in which I of 5 to 10 Age was still in mind. But the horrific events and my personal experiences I would not go. What

want to talk to it?

Sylvia K. about the aftermath. For one, I now know has suffered from the self-esteem - to suicide. It has socialized us like a Southern street dog, who in the pecking order at the bottom standing only whines for mercy, so he is not defeated. One I've always feared: the loss of my freedom and be subject to other People. I was branded. No matter what I did or where I was, I stayed home the child is ashamed of, because it was not like the others.

I know from your resume but that you have made high school and studied.

Sylvia K. right. I have to thank my mother and my combative intent, that I will never do it again to do with social misery. I studied geology and geography. I learned to fly, was city planner, learned as a TV writer to know the world, sometimes I made good time around I cancer.

The fate of Sylvia K. (III)

"children's home smell clings to me,"

"Sometimes I made good, sometimes I get around cancer," says Sylvia K. (name changed) her life, city planner, she was, a TV writer, she have seen the world and always feared one thing: the loss of their freedom. Because she had been socialized as "a southern European stray dog - To want to slam without the dogs "in a children's home in northern Hesse. The consequences of that home education, which she would have to tell. The 53-year-old living abroad who return to Germany they will not. Her son is 13

Today your son living with you. Did you get custody back?

Sylvia K. No. I had a feeling soon that we only stayed the flight. Because the father had long since lost the fun of a child. After years of single parents and after the proceedings I was broke. So I swiped on 2 October 2004 my son and fled with him into the distant Portugal.

where you are but not long remain with your son?

Sylvia K. live since the summer of 2005 we have the language for a German speaking community in a neighboring country of Germany. My son can go to school. The years of fear to be discovered in the neck, to be exploited to always, always live in uncertainty, what should I pay the rent, has made me really down. Now, as I tell my story in short form, remember to come back here again anger and despair equally high in me.

you still have to be afraid?

Sylvia K. Since a few weeks, I know that we are no longer sought. After much begging his father moved back to its display. But I had to assure him that I make no financial claims. He still has sole custody, but agree that our son lives with me.

is however ruled out a return to Germany?

Sylvia K. We can not return to Germany, because then would the authorities take my son because the father is divorced. My son does not want him. He would then probably be accommodated as once planned a stranger. For another lengthy dispute I currently have neither the nerve nor the money. Above all, I will not do that to my son. He should not get my trauma. In addition, I do not want to return to Germany. have

My story, my experiences with the custody of authorities showed me in a startling way, what a horrible rule arbitrariness and inhumanity still behind the scenes. I could now give a few soundbites for the best. Our case had sometimes Kafkaesque features.

My whole life I had the feeling that the smell of the orphanage is still liable to me.

Then the son away

"I made good time, sometimes I get around cancer," says Sylvia K. (name changed) her life, she was city planner, a TV writer, she had seen the world and always a feared: the loss of their freedom. Because she had been socialized as "a southern European stray dog - to try to clean off without the dog" in a children's home in northern Hesse. They have a son and are a single parent?

Sylvia K. Yes. I am a single parent, would not have been more dramatic if my son was not diagnosed very early from severe eczema, which was followed later asthma, although we lived as it should be in good health: rural. We had two horses and a large dog, two acres of pasture, a forest, a river, neighbor children. It was absolutely idyllic. But to sleep was not to think in the night with the illness of my son. I soon could no longer work part time and was the father of my now 13-year-old son do not support us. The walk to the welfare office, I hesitated for known reasons. We punched through to the farm should be sold.

Somehow missing now the Youth Office, which always shows up at some point, if a problem is sensed.

Sylvia K. you seem to know is there. After a Klimakur, when my son was perfectly healthy, we were staying temporarily in the house of a fellow student. The pilot was a lot. One day a horrible woman from social services at the door and told me in 20 minutes for parenting skills. The father of my son had gotten married and his wife was looking for a foster child. What could be more than my son to be envisaged?

When was that?

Sylvia K.: On a beautiful August day of 2002. What happened next, reflecting the whole Harassment from my time as a foster child resists. And I realized that people disdain and reduction by some social workers had not changed. However, I will not deny that there are others.

What happened to your son? He was taken away from you?

Sylvia K. My son was trimmed down to the best interests of the sought. They described him as disturbed. And he threatened to become. Because he did not understand why he could no longer live with me.

almost two years I fought a losing battle. I had long since lost all rights to my son, the rights were subject to a visitation by the hour supervision become. The opinion in the context of an absurd custody dispute was purely a courtesy advice that arbitrariness was even laymen. It came even to an investigation of the consultant. But it petered out.

Dear Dr. Vollmer,

"They witnessed brutal violence", the "Neue Westfälische on 3 March 2009 interview, reprinted with you. Reference is made to bad conditions in children's homes "well into the 1970s." This also deals in December last year set up "round table" of the German Bundestag. Their task "Passing on perpetrators and victims" taken between. In a letter dated

15th December 2008 she asked me to send you information that I think are important. As you know, I am working for over a year as an editor with this issue.

it must be particularly alarming to the early 1970s, received in a children's home that has been in wood (Landkreis Holzminden). But all the victims, that said a colleague and I were talking, that they do without compensation. Reason: "What has impressed us the church, no one can make good."

That to me is further evidence of how difficult will be the work-up. But it could still be difficult. Because abuse and sexual abuse, there has been apparently in the 1980s. It is about a boarding school that there was until 1987 the castle Eringerfeld.

The internet address even the name of the alleged torturer. I hope that you also use such sources. I know you to: http://bundestagsausschuss.blogspot.com

mail from El Salvador

Dear Mr. Tjaden,

as I could read on the Internet, was established some time ago, a "Round Table" under the direction of Mrs. Dr. Vollmer, of the partially unimaginable "treatment" in to investigate Catholic homes.

I myself, born in 46, male, belongs to the group the long-suffering. First raised in the Episcopal orphanage at Paderborn and later in a home of the "Sisters of Charity" in Höxter. Not only inhuman "punishments" are often the norm, but also sexual abuse, with the sisters have acted in my view, often worse than the priests. I own the mid-90s visited the orphanage in Paderborn. There was communicated with, however, that all documents were destroyed.

Unfortunately I can not web-mail address of the "Round Table" section. I would Grateful if you could send me this.

Sincerely
Peter Schild
